In 2016 we were approached by the RIAS ‘Architect in the Hoose’ scheme to provide advice to a couple who were considering extending their home.  The initial consultation providing our thoughts and ideas was very successful and they subsequently decided to appoint us. 

 

The clients were looking to relocate the existing northeast facing living room to the rear of the property to give them a better connection with their southwest facing garden.  The existing kitchen was also very small and dark so they wanted the extension to form an open plan living/kitchen space that could be enjoyed by the family.  They also required a large family bathroom, utility and master bedroom. 

 

Our solution was to extend the property on both the gable and rear with two opposing mono pitched extensions.  The gable extension provides a spacious bathroom and utility.  The rear extension provides a light and airy living room, which opens to the secluded garden.  A slapping was formed in the external wall of the property to connect the kitchen with the new living space.  The former living room was transformed into a master bedroom with en suite. 

 

Both extensions are clad in larch with a metal roof and timber windows.  The high-level window detail within the living room floods the room with light and gives glimpses to the trees and sky beyond.  The completed extension has inspired the client and they have continued to make improvements to their home.
